How Recovery Actually Works
Recovery from an abdominoplasty is best understood in three overlapping phases. Days 1–7 are the acute phase — the most uncomfortable stretch, when walking, compression, and pain management are the focus. Weeks 2–6 are the functional recovery phase — pain drops, work restarts (desk first, then physical), posture straightens, exercise reintroduces at the six-week mark. Months 2–18 are the maturation phase — swelling continues to settle, the abdominal wall remodels, and the scar goes through its 12-to-18-month journey from raised-and-pink to flat-and-pale.
The most common source of patient frustration is the timescale mismatch: patients expect swelling to be gone at 6 weeks and scars to be invisible at 6 months. Neither is realistic. Understanding the real timeline up front — and using the specific tools that shorten it — is the single most useful thing recovery preparation can do.
